Schoolyard of the Collège de la Veveyse

Ripping up asphalt to make room for playotopes!

Until recently, the schoolyard of this school in Vevey — built in 1971 — amounted to 2,500sqm of asphalt, three benches, two bins and zero play facilities for 300 pupils. The space was designed primarily for ball games… and little else.
But times are changing, and so are children’s expectations. Located close to the Veveyse River, this schoolyard has undergone a profound transformation aimed at reintroducing nature, diversifying uses and revealing the potential of the existing soil. Our intervention was based on a careful reading of the site and a participatory process bringing together children, teachers, municipal services and contractors.

Renaturing the schoolyard: removal of a large portion of the asphalt, revealing a gravelly soil ideal for planting, creation of vegetated islands and the planting of numerous trees.

An inclusive play space: non-gendered, universally accessible facilities designed to encourage a diversity of uses, moving away from a schoolyard focused solely on ball games.

A co-created project: a participatory process involving children and parents, coordinated with municipal services, the DGIP and the Monuments and Sites authority to enhance a listed school site.
