Located between the CFF railway station and Avenue du Général Guisan, Town Hall Square stands out as one of Sierre’s major public spaces. Freed from traffic, it is transformed into a welcoming place to linger, respectful of its architectural identity and open to everyday uses as well as the city’s major events.
In response to climate warming, the project relies on the natural resources of water, soil and vegetation to reduce heat-island effects. A new canopy of large trees provides shade and thermal comfort, while permeable surfaces, landscaped swales and a permeable asphalt direct water towards the roots. Together, these elements transform the square into a true natural cooling system: infiltration, evapotranspiration, rain gardens and continuous planting restore resilience to the city centre.
To complement these shaded areas, modular, versatile and reusable wooden furniture creates flexible spaces for relaxation: circular platforms around trees, loungers near the fountain, and an urban parasol at the foot of the steps. Designed for everyday use, this furniture can also be moved or reconfigured to accommodate markets, festivals and public events.
